The FreeMix project's history
The FreeMix project was initially designed as a reimplementation of the GDAM software mixer. In 2001 GDAM's development pace slowed down considerably, and as new technologies (like the GNOME 2 platform) started to appear on the Linux desktop (or maybe he was just fed up with crappy resampler - update: after seeing this work from the original author, I understand why the resampler wasn't a priority :)), ath was forced to look around for an alternative to the trusty GDAM he used in his DJ sets.
After years of thinking about the problem, he started the FreeMix project around January 2004. The first experimental versions were nothing more than unstable collections of hacks, as it's the case for the only released pre-alpha, Preview 1, on August 2004.
After two years of rewriting (during which no part of the old release worked any more), the current code is far better structured and reliable, but an actual working release is still far away.
